ENTER, WAYWARD SOUL

Welcome back to our monthly Rogue Fortune devlog, where we dive behind the scenes of the Well of Eternal Riches and lay bare these ooky spooky October updates.

For those who prefer to watch, our video log can be found here:

ENEMY ADVANCEMENTS

So much happened this month in art and design, some of which you may already have seen on our socials.

Our Advanced enemy variants have been getting some love – a step up in combat skill and appearance, evolving to become more feral alongside the temple as you progress. We’re even ironing out names for them, so get ready to meet the Zealot Guards and Rangers.

Vicious claws, vestigial fallen angel wings and a double-edged sword come into play for our advanced melee Guards. Whereas a reptilian hunch, uncanny neck and golden mask with balistraria slats makes up our master Ranger.

Their elite, hardest level designs are still to come with Biome 3... but that is going to remain a secret for a while longer, adventurers...

ENVIRONMENTAL TWEAKS

Some smaller updates have been added to our environments - with lighting improvements, more decor iteration, and room entrances getting extra attention.

Our doorways and transition pieces between cells were pretty bulky, so Hessa’s been hard at work designing alternatives to skinnymaxx our giant hand doors. Let us know if you have any favourites here, as it’s still a bit of a hot debate!

Stef also tackled the change that seems so small but makes such a difference: the chonky intersections between the floor and our mounds of gold. Gone are the filthy hard edges, now only seamless transition planes of individual coins.

Everyone say thank you, Stef.

RELICS & VFX

John and Duarte have been cooking on VFX: testing out new exploding barrel designs, and working with UI to enhance the visual feedback on abilities and adjacency on your relic board.

When relics come into range of another they can empower, they’ll glow; their eyes might ignite, and placing them or locking in a synergy jets off sparks; moving them out of range triggers the sad purple debuff smoke.

It’s honestly sick as hell, so we can’t wait to get this in your hands to try for yourselves.

VFX also got stuck in with UI and audio to really make feedback on health, ammo and spectral charge bars POP!! The combined effect is insanely crisp, so that's another job well done!

And speaking of UI...

THE FINAL CURTAIN FOR DEATH SCREENS

In our very first devlog, we mentioned we’d designed something like 100 death screen concepts? Just like our roguelite loop, we’re still going but getting stronger every time!

We’re honing in on what may just be our final UI/UX flow and visuals on this particular piece, and Sam and Joe have been working insane levels of witchcraft to get it looking this awesome.

They’ve also been refining visual flow for shops, menus, selecting relics and more - so we’ll share those updates as they come.

Most importantly, however, we’ve been building in our tutorials and first time user experience framework... gearing up for a playtest, so keep your eyes peeled for sign-ups... perhaps sooner than you think 👀

QUALITY OF LIFE SO GOOD WE HAD TO FRAME IT

And now it’s the exciting part!

As we know, framerates are arguably one of the most divisively important parts of the gaming experience... which is why we’re buzzing that Rogue Fortune is on her way to UNCAPPED FRAMES, baby!!!

Thank you to Jonathan for making this a reality, because she is smoooooth. I'd put a GIF but it simply wouldn't capture it right, so just trust me -- it's great.

You haven’t seen butter till you’ve seen Rogue Fortune running at 200 FPS.

AND THAT’S ALL, FOLKS!

Another cracking month of discoveries, and some deeply unhinged moments on Instagram – how much screenshake IS too much?? – is done and dusted.

Let us know what you think, and don’t forget to wishlist Rogue Fortune on Steam OR drop into our official Discord! It’s the place to be for all the answers to our questions, behind the scenes exclusives, and all the updates on our office pets so... why are you missing out? 🧡

We’ll see ya again soon, adventurers!
